While Chinese President Xi Jinping and Beijing have reiterated that the 'reunification' with Taiwan would be peaceful and military action would be reserved for "secessionist forces", Taiwan's Defence Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng said today that “bullets don’t discriminate based on colour [political affiliation] once war breaks out”

He asserted that Taiwan’s military forces had a duty to protect all of its people and safeguard national security to ensure that people continue to enjoy a free and democratic environment in the country. In context of Chinese “incursions” into Taiwan’s airspace with over 150 jets in October itself, he said that tensions across the Taiwan Strait "are really the grimmest I have seen in more than 40 years of military service”.
