Debt-Ridden Farmer Hangs Self In Madhya Pradesh's Barwani

A debt-ridden farmer, Dinesh Parmar, hanged himself in a well in Madhya Pradesh’s Barwani district.

According to the Badwani police, suicide note has been recovered from the 40-year-old Parmar in which he held a moneylender responsible for his death.

In the investigation so far, it has been learned that Dinesh Parmar had taken a loan of Rs 1.3 lakh rupees from the local moneylender but due to arbitrary interest, he was under pressure to pay Rs 8 lakh. Dinesh sold his farm and paid Rs 3 lakh, but the moneylender did not stop pursuing him. So, fed up with repeated threats of debt collection, Dinesh ended his life.

According to Dinesh's younger brother, he used to get phone calls frequently and he was running under a lot of stress. He did not even tell in his house how much the debt has increased on him due to interest. District Collector of Barwani, Shivraj Singh Verma said that the farmer has written about borrowing from a money lender in his suicide note. The matter is under investigation.

Meanwhile, the Government of Madhya Pradesh has approved the Banking Amendment Bill and the Scheduled Tribes Debt Waiver Bill 2020. Under this bill, a provision is being made for the SC and ST farmers to waive all the loans till 15 August 2020 along with interest. It is not clear yet how many farmers will be able to get rid of moneylenders but there is a large network of moneylenders in the State and thousands of farmers are buried under debt due to arbitrary interest.
