President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has announced The Afghan Support Package which would take the bloc’s total pledge to €1 bn in humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan. The fresh funding was declared ahead of the G20 Extraordinary Summit on Afghanistan, totalling €700 million.
Europe is taking the leadership of the global solidarity effort.

The funding will be channelled to international organizations working directly on ground and not to the Taliban regime, which is yet to be recognized by most of the world including Brussels. Von der Leyen has tweeted: “Our conditions for any engagement with the Afghan authorities are clear, including on human rights. But the Afghans should not pay the price of the Taliban’s actions. The Support Package is for the Afghan people and the country´s neighbours who have provided help.”
