The sixth iteration of the Swach Survekshan Awards which is said to be the “world’s largest survey on urban cleanliness” by the MOHUA (Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs) once again announced Indore in Madhya Pades as the country’s leanest city. This is the fifth time that the city has bagged this award. Indore was followed by Surat in Gujarat at second place and Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh holding third rank.
A total of 4,320 cities took part in the survey and 342 were given some ranking. Chhattisgarh was adjudicated the cleanest state for this year, and Varanasi was judged as the “cleanest Ganga town”.
A host of leaders reacted to the awards. MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri expressed their gladness and conveyed congratulations.

Swach Survekshan is conducted in partnership with the QCI (Quality Control of India) and SBM (Swachh Bharat Mission). It started in 2016 with 72 cities and expanded to 4,242 cities by 2020. There are three parameters to rank cities: service level progress (SLP), certifications and citizen's voice.
