Karnataka Colleges Hijab Ban: Case In HC Amid On-Ground Stone Pelting

Last month some female students from Udupi College protested a decision made by college officials to prohibit them from attending courses in hijabs. It expanded to other colleges in Udupi and other districts, with several announcing a vacation on Monday as some students continued to wear hijabs, which were opposed by others wearing saffron shawls.
The case reached the High Court as the students filed petition on this same issue. The case had its hearing today at the High Court in which the court stated that they will go by the law and reason and not by passion or emotions.
Though the High Court gave their hearing the Hijab row turned violent in Karnataka as incidents of stone pelting and lathi-charge were reported in the state at Pre-University Colleges. According to sources, many students were injured in the stone pelting as well during the protest.
The police claimed that the protest became violent after an argument  broke out between the hijab wearing students and another group of students who came in saffron shawls.
As tension prevailed in the college area, the college management here also declared a holiday for an indefinite period. The police rushed to the spot and are controlling the situation.
