Kremlin Critic Alexei Navalny, Who Was Poisoned, Detained After Russia Return

Top Kremlin critic, Alexei Navalny, was detained by Russian police at a Moscow airport on Sunday, moments after he flew back home for the first time since his poisoning last summer.

Navalny was detained at passport control at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport after he flew in from Berlin despite warnings that he'd face immediate arrest.

Navalny's detention provoked an immediate rebuke from the European Union. "The detainment of Alexey Navalny upon arrival in Moscow is unacceptable. I call on Russian authorities to immediately release him," European Council president Charles Michel wrote on Twitter.

Navalny has been a longtime anti-corruption campaigner and government critic, who in the last decade has become the most prominent opponent of President Vladimir Putin.

Navalny was poisoned last summer with a Novichok nerve agent which the anti-corruption activist has blamed on the Kremlin.
