Deposed civilian leader and Nobel Peace prize Laureate Auung San Suu Kyi,76, will be brought to trial on five corruption charges in what is being widely described as a politically motivated move by the military junta. Suu Kyi is presently under house arrest. She is the leader of the National Unity government that was formed after the military coup on February 1.
The charges brought against her at the hearing include sedition, two counts of flouting COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, illegally importing walkie-talkies, and unlicensed use of radios. Four charges are by the Mandalay Region High Court and one will be heard in Yangon Region High Court.
