The supersonic cruise missile BrahMos is produced by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India and Russia. It can be launched from submarines, ships, planes, or land platforms.
According to military officials, the USD 374 million contract is for Philippines Navy to get shore-based anti-ship BrahMos missiles.
"On January 28, 2022, BAPL (BrahMos Aerospace) signed a deal with the Department of National Defence of the Republic of Philippines for supply of shore-based anti-ship missile system to Philippines," the Defence Ministry stated in a statement.
Philippines’s Defence Minister Delfin Lorenzana was present at the ceremony and conference that would conclude the deal between the two countries and upgrade their defence ties.
The deal is being seen as strategically significant amid rising tensions of China with India and other countries in the South China Sea region, which includes the Philippines. The acquisition of the missiles is seen as a counterweight to China’s naval prowess in the region.
India’s domestic defence manufacturing has not made much impact in the global arms market and India has to import critical defence equipment itself as well, and therefore this deal could mark a turning point in this regard.
While the Philippines is the first country to receive the missile system, several other Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam and Thailand, have showed interest in purchasing it, according to sources.
