Omicron Variant Causing Concerns

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in a tweet addressed to the Prime Minister who is presently chairing a meeting on the Covid situation that India should restrict international flights to stop the new variant from entering the country.

The WTO has also suspended an in-person ministerial conference in Geneva because of the Omicron strain, a new variant of the coronavirus discovered in South Africa. The meeting had been postponed due to "an outbreak of a particularly transmissible strain of the COVID-19 virus", it stated.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed it as a Variant of Concern (VOC). It states on its website: “This variant has a large number of mutations, some of which are concerning. Preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection with this variant, as compared to other VOCs. The number of cases of this variant appears to be increasing in almost all provinces in South Africa. Current SARS-CoV-2 PCR diagnostics continue to detect this variant.”
