Popularly called ‘King of Spices’, the owner of spice brand MDH, 'Mahashay’ Dharampal Gulati, passed away on Thursday at the age of 98. He was undergoing treatment at Mata Chandan Devi Hospital in Delhi for the last few weeks and had suffered a cardiac arrest on Thursday. Dharmapala Gulati is called 'Dada ji' or 'Mahashay ji'. He was born on March 27, 1923, in Sialkot in present-day Pakistan.

His father had a business of spices and he was associated with his father in spices work in Sialkot itself. After partition, he moved to India and opened a spice shop in Karol Bagh, Delhi. From his shop in Karol Bagh, he made the MDH company the largest producer of spices in India.

Dharampal Gulati was conferred the Padma Bhushan by President Ram Nath Kovind in 2019.
