Starlink Broadband Speed Will Double To 300 Mbps This Year: Elon Musk

Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite-based internet provider, will double in speed “later this year”, revealed Elon Musk on Twitter, in reply to someone who had just received their Starlink beta kit. Currently, the company promises speeds between 50 to 150Mbps.

While 300Mbps isn’t too fast, it’s faster than many people currently have access to, especially in the low-to-medium population density areas that Musk mentions in his second tweet.

In his reply, Elon also tells the person that their latency should improve to around 20ms as well. In the speed test screenshots uploaded by the user, his latency was at 34 and 44ms respectively, while Starlink’s website says to expect between 20 and 40ms during the beta.

Musk also said that Starlink will be able to cover most of the Earth by the end of the year, which may mean that pretty much every country around the world will come within the map service. That could also include India, but Starlink hasn’t confirmed a roadmap yet. "Most of Earth by end of year, all by next year, then it’s about densifying coverage. Important to note that cellular will always have the advantage in dense urban areas. Satellites are best for low to medium population density areas," tweeted Musk.

The Elon Musk-owned aerospace company SpaceX intends to provide high-speed internet connectivity from the Starlink constellation of satellites.
