UN Secretary-General Asks For USD $3.12 Billion For 2022 Budget

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has asked for $3.12 billion US dollars as for the organization’s 2022 budget. He told the Fifth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly that “to fully implement the mandates entrusted to us, we will require a total of 3.12 billion U.S. dollars before re-costing, which represents a net reduction of 2.8 percent compared to 2021, despite additional activities and mandates”.

As of September 2021, 130 member states have paid their dues in full. India paid its due amount of $ 24,123,943 (24 million USD) on 29th January, according to the UN website. The UN faced a liquidity problem in the beginning of the year, falling behind estimates by around USD $199 million, which were added to the previous year’s arrears of USD $808 million.

In April, the UN received a record-setting collection of $1 billion, after which its total collections reached 76% of estimates.

However, Guterres said, “this should not lull us into complacency. The overall total masks numerous fluctuations in collections each month, pointing to the challenges of planning budget implementation with such uncertainties. Our fair-weather regulatory framework leaves much to be desired, and it is my hope that member states will see the need for full and predictable funding so that we can focus on the delivery of our mandates guided by the budgets and not by cash on hand”.
