Unabated Police Brutality On Minorities: Cops Assault Sikh Man In Madhya Pradesh

The Shivraj Singh Chouhan government and the police are under fire after a video showing a Sikh man beaten up brutally in Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh. In the viral video, the person whom the policemen are dragging by holding hair has been identified as Prem Singh Granthi. Two policemen Sitaram Bhatnagar and Mohan Jamre have been suspended after several organisations including Shiromani Akali Dal raised voice against it.

The scuffle took place in Rajpur tehsil of Barwani after an argument over a tea cart broke out between the police and Prem Singh Granthi which turned into a fight. In the viral video, Prem Singh can be seen pleading to let him go while the police are grabbing his hair and taking him away.

Superintendent of Police of Barwani, Nimish Aggarwal claims that Prem Singh already has three cases of theft. He was intoxicated at the time of the scuffle and when he was asked for a licence for the ship, he created a ruckus. Prem Singh has alleged that the police asked for a bribe and when he refused to give the bribe, the cops beat him.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan of Madhya Pradesh suspended the two policemen. He said that ASI Sitaram Bhatnagar and Head Constable Mohan Jamre in Barwani were immediately suspended for inhuman treatment against Sikh brothers. Such barbarism against Sikhs will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The case will be investigated by the Indore IG and strict action will be taken against them.

However, cases of police brutality on Dalits and minorities are coming to light again and again in Madhya Pradesh. Recently, the MP police had to face criticism for assaulting a Dalit farmer family in Guna. At the same time, a Muslim woman Saira, who was fed up with police harassment in Dewas, tried to self-immolate herself.
