World On “Catastrophic Path”, 1.5°C Global Warming Cap Unlikely: UN

The United Nations has warned in a report that the world is headed on a “catastrophic path” and that global warming could lead to average world temperature being 2.7°C above preindustrial levels, a level way above the 1.5°C target. In the 2015 Paris Agreement, it was agreed to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels in this century.

However, the latest UN report assesses that at the current pledges of countries, emissions in 2030 would be 16% higher than that in 2010, contradicting the 45% reduction threshold that is necessary to avert catastrophic climate change, according to scientists. A new report analysing pledges made by countries until October 12 is slated to be published on October 25.
