After Surat, Rajasthan’s Bhilwara textile industry is going through a crisis. GST, demonetisation and expensive electricity rates are said to be the reasons behind the slowdown.

Textile industry in Bhilwara employs more than 30 thousand people. Bhilwara’s textile industry is the second largest industry after Surat where silk work is done on silk thread and cloth.

Traders say that their business has fallen rapidly in the last 6 months that the crisis situation has arisen. At the same time, traders say that due to the ongoing recession in textile industry, the production in textile industry of Bhilwara has come down to 25%… The impact of recession is that traders have to take Saturday, Sunday off.

The Rajasthan Textile Traders Association says that one of the reasons for the slowdown in Bhilwara's textile business is the increased electricity rate. Rajasthan has a power rate that’s 40% higher than other states. No special packages have been given to the textile sector by the Rajasthan government. Textile Federation members have many times demanded the state government to reduce electricity rates.
