For The First Time, Diesel Costlier Than Petrol In
After a continuous hike in fuel prices for 17 days, only diesel prices were increased on the 18th day.

On Wednesday, diesel was up by 48 paise after which diesel became costlier for the first time in Delhi.

In Delhi, diesel costs Rs 79.88 per litre while petrol is at Rs 79.76 paise per litre.

In the last 18 days, diesel has become expensive by Rs 10.48 and petrol by Rs 8.50 paise per litre.

This is the first time, diesel has become costlier than petrol. Earlier, the Central and State Governments used to levy less tax on diesel against petrol, but after the deregulation in October 2014, the gap between the two fuel has disappeared.

In Delhi, 64% tax is levied on petrol and 63% on diesel, due to which petrol prices have been reduced against diesel on 18th day. However, as compared to Delhi, the price of diesel is still lower than petrol in other states.

In addition to Delhi, the price of petrol in Kolkata has been Rs 81.45 and the price of diesel has been increased to Rs 74.63 per litre. One litre of petrol in Chennai costs Rs 83.04 and diesel at Rs 76.77. Similarly, petrol in Mumbai is being sold at Rs 86.54 per litre and diesel at Rs 77.76 per litre.

It is also not the case that there has been a big jump in crude oil prices in the international market. On Wednesday, crude oil is being sold in the international market at $40.13 per barrel, which is quite low.

As Diesel gets expensive, then it has a direct effect on inflation as most of the essential goods are sent from one state to another through heavy vehicles which run on diesel.
