The number of people using over-the-top (OTT) platforms to watch online video content has risen exponentially, leading to the slow demise of television in India. According to a recent survey by the app-distribution platform, MoMagic, conducted over 7500 people of India, 55% of respondents prefer to watch videos on OTT platforms such as Hotstar, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. Whereas only 41 percent of viewers have opted for Direct-to-home (DTH) services.

While Netflix may be the world’s leading internet entertainment service but Star India’s Hotstar has emerged as the most preferred online platform to watch content in the country. As per the survey, 41 percent of respondents say they prefer to watch Disney owned Hotstar, while 26% of respondents picked Amazon Prime Video and 9% chose Netflix.

Hotstar, currently, has 300 million subscribers in India, whereas Amazon Prime and Netflix have 13 million and 11 million subscribers respectively. On these platforms, 31% of Indian consumers prefer watching web series and short films. Whereas 30% of the respondents preferred sports, movies at 19% and TV shows at 18%.

These data show that OTT platforms are giving tough competition to DTH as viewers are ditching TV for online content.
