Worsening Flood Situation In Several States
Large parts of the country are reeling under heavy rain, landslides and floods amid the coronavirus pandemic. From the north-eastern states of Assam and Meghalaya to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand to the southern state of Kerala, floods are wreaking havoc. The number of flood-affected people in Assam has exceeded 72 lakh while 111 people have died. The state's Kaziranga National Park is almost entirely submerged  and over 115 animals have died, including 88 hog deer and 11 rhinoceros.

The people of Meghalaya are also suffering due to the destruction caused by the Brahmaputra river in Assam. In the western Garo Hills district, floods have washed away many villages and killed at least five people. According to an estimate, more than one and a half million people have fallen prey to this flood in this district. Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted that the deaths due to flooding in the Western Garo Hills are disturbing. He has also spoken to the State Chief Minister Konrad Sangma.

Agartala, the capital of Tripura, another state in the northeast, has been flooded due to which the movement has come to a standstill. The Meteorological Department has also issued a rainfall alert for the next three days in the state. 

At least 19 people have lost their lives in the Hindi belt of the state of Bihar due to floods and falling electricity. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for East and West Champaran, Gopalganj, Vaishali, Sitamarhi and Darbhanga. The water level in Bagmati river and Gandak river is rising dangerously. Water has entered the residential areas in the capital Patna and Muzaffarpur. In Saharsa, the Kosi river is flowing above the danger mark. In Supaul, hundreds of people are being evacuated from the villages in the low lying areas by boats.

Due to the continuous release of water from Nepal, the risk of flooding is increasing in many districts of UP. In Barabanki, the Saryu river is flowing above the danger mark, then the water level of the Kuda river in Siddharth Nagar has increased considerably.

In Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, at least 5 people have died due to rain and landslides. In Pithoragarh, many houses have fallen due to cloudburst. Amid heavy rains in Haridwar, lightning fell on Har Ki Pauri in the early hours of Monday and many walls collapsed. According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rain is expected in some areas of Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Tehri.

The Meteorological Department estimates that Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh may receive rain in the next two days. Heavy and very heavy rainfall may occur in some places. 

Expressing concern over the increasing challenge of floods in Nepal as well as India, the United Nations has put forth a hand to help. Federation spokesman Stephen Duzarik said that about 4 million people have been displaced by the floods in both countries.
