The reins of the ongoing battle against the coronavirus across the world are in the hands of doctors and health care workers. Stories of doctors engaged in treating coronavirus patients without getting tired and without stopping have become known all over the world.

But doctors who are treating coronavirus patients in our country are getting threats and landlords are pressuring them to vacate homes.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal posted a tweet, “These doctors are saving our lives, putting their lives at risk. Their landlords should not do this. It is wrong. God forbid, if tomorrow someone in the families of these landlords gets coronavirus, then these doctors will only help.”

The Delhi government has asked for strict action to be taken against those landlords who are harassing doctors and paramedical staff engaged in the treatment of COVID-19 patients. In this connection, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also spoken to the Delhi Police Commissioner and asked for security to be provided to doctors.

Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan also posted a tweet, “I’m deeply anguished to see reports pouring in from Delhi, Noida, Warangal, Chennai etc that doctors & paramedics are being ostracised in residential complexes & societies. All precautions are being taken by doctors & staff on #COVID2019 duty to ensure they’re not carriers of infection in any way.”

He wrote that any harsh steps will demoralise doctors and medical staff and derail the health care system. Dr Harsh Vardhan wrote that it’s our duty to keep their morale high.

Earlier, the Resident Doctors’ Association at Delhi’s AIIMS had written letters to the AIIMS Director, the Health Minister and Home Minister Amit Shah and informed them about these attacks and threats.

According to a nurse working at LNJP Hospital, when some people in her colony found out that she is treating a coronavirus patient, they were not letting her enter the colony.

A similar incident came to light in Delhi’s Vinod Nagar too. The affected person said, “My neighbours think that coronavirus spreads through clothes too. Therefore, they cut the clothesline, so that I cannot dry my clothes outside in the balcony.”
