COVID-19 cases in India witnessed the biggest single-day surge for the fourth consecutive day on Monday with 6,977 new cases over the past 24 hours, pushing the nationwide total to 138,845, while 154 fatalities raise the death toll to 4,021, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The active cases in the country have mounted to 77,103, while 57,720 patients have recovered.

This raises India to the 10th spot globally after overtaking Iran which has 1,35,701 active cases. If the pace of infections shows no sign of letting off, then India will soon surpass Turkey. Currently, Turkey ranks ninth in the list of 10 most coronavirus-hit countries, with over 1.56 lakh cases.

India is registering an average of 1000 new cases each day.

US remains the most COVID-19 affected country worldwide, with over 1.6 million cases, followed by Brazil. Brazil has reported with 3.5 lakh within four weeks.

Russia, the UK and Spain are at the third, fourth and fifth position respectively. Barring the UK and France, the COVID-19 curve is steadily moving upwards in all other affected countries.
