Donald Trump has become the first US president to attend an anti-abortion rally.

President Trump addressed thousands at the annual ‘March for Life’ rally near the US Capitol. "We're here for a very simple reason: to defend the right of every child born and unborn to fullfil their God-given potential, “ Trump said.

Anti and pro abortion protesters have often clashed in the US, sometimes outside abortion clinics.

In January 1973, the Supreme Court of the United States invalidated 50 state laws and made abortion legal – on demand – throughout the United States in the decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton.

In January 1974, the first March for Life walked on Washington to lobby Congressional leadership to find a legislative solution to the Supreme Court’s decision. Soon after realising congressional protection of the unborn was not on the horizon, the movement’s leaders decided to hold a March for Life every year until Roe v. Wade is overturned.

Welcoming President Trump’s presence at the Washington rally on Friday, Jeanne Mancini, President of March for Life, said: “We are deeply honoured to welcome President Trump to the 47th annual March for Life. He will be the first president in history to attend and we are so excited for him to experience in person how passionate our marchers are about life and protecting the unborn”.

From the appointment of pro-life judges and federal workers, to cutting taxpayer funding for abortions here and abroad, to calling for an end to late-term abortions, President Trump and his Administration have been consistent champions for life and their support for the March for Life has been unwavering, she added.
