In the joint press conference with VP Kamala Harris, Modi said that India and the US are “natural partners” with common values and geopolitical interests. Calling India and the United States the biggest and the oldest democracies of the  world, Modi said that both countries share values in common and cooperation is also making progress.

The Prime Minister also visited his Australian and Japanese counterparts, Scott Morrison and Yoshihide Suga. Both countries are part of the Quad alliance, whose first physical in-person meeting is upcoming today on 24th September. Before this, a virtual meeting of these leaders was conducted in Match this year.

Meeting Australian PM Scott Morrison

Before the Quad leaders summit, the PM met his Australian counterpart in Washington. Both leaders have met several times at various international events. Morrison had called Modi to inform about the new AUKUS alliance between Australia, US, and the UK.

On 15th September, both leaders had a telephonic conversation, during which they also went over the strategic cooperation which presently includes a 2-2 dialogue as well.

After meeting PM Scott Morrison, PM Modi tweeted the following

Meeting Japanese PM Yoshide Suga

The PM also met his Japanese counterpart Yoshihide Suga on Thursday. Before the first in person Quad meet hosted by US President Joe Biden, the two premiers discussed ways of strengthening bilateral strategic relations. After the meeting, PM Modi tweeted: “Japan is one of India’s most valued partners. I had an excellent meeting with PM @sugawitter on a variety of subjects that would further boost cooperation between our nations. A strong India-Japan friendship augurs well for the entire planet.”

Besides these two high-level meetings, Prime Minister Modi will meet American President Joe Biden. Among other bilateral issues, it is likely that the Afghanistan issue will also be prominent for both leaders.  This is the first time that Modi wil meet Biden since his election as president in January. Before this, the Prime Minister had met Joe Biden in 2014, when Biden was the Vice President in the Obama administration.

The two leaders have had many conversations since after Biden, a Democrat, became the President in January 2020.
