SDG 30 UN General Assembly
Ahead of the 76th United Nations General Assembly on 21st September, which is the highest policy-making body of the UN, a high-level meeting ‘SDG Moment 2021’ is being organized to take stock of the world’s efforts in calibrating their COVID response to be able to meet Sustainable Development Goals in 2030. Korean K-pop band BTS will be returning to the UNGA stage after their popular appearance in 2018. This time too, their performance will be virtual.

The UN General Assembly is the main policy making body of the United Nations. Recovering from the COVID pandemic, ensuring green and equitable economic development, and accelerating the implementation of SDGs will be its main focus.

The SDG Moment 2021 will be a held a day before the General Debate, the main event of the UNGA. The General Debate will be conducted between 21-27 September, 2021. The theme for this year’s General Debate will be "Building resilience through hope – to recover from COVID-19, rebuild sustainably, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people, and revitalize the United Nations”.

The SDG Moment 2021 conference aims to take stock of the progress being made towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The SDGs were first adopted in September 2015.

“The SDG Moment serves to place an annual spotlight on the Sustainable Development Goals” The purpose pf organizing this conference is to “provide world leaders with a platform to showcase the bold plans, actions and solutions that are needed to end the COVID-19 pandemic and set the world on course towards achieving the SDGs.”

30 heads of state and governments will be speaking at this high level meeting. This is the second iteration of the SDG Moment; the first was held three years after the goals were adopted (2018). The meeting “will focus on national plans, pathways, partnerships and recovery efforts for accelerating SDG progress during the Decade of Action”

The Decade Of Action began in 2020 aimed at “accelerating sustainable solutions to all the world’s biggest challenges” and ultimately meeting SDGs of 2030.

The SDG moment will be conducted in a hybrid format, i.e., combination of virtual and physical presence of delegates. It will be opened by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. There will be a roundtable meet to address the challenges that COVID-19 presents to the journey of meeting SDGs, in a session titled ‘State of the COVID-19 Response and Recovery’. On its ‘Decade of Action’ webpage, the U.N. says: “While the [pandemic] crisis is imperilling progress towards the SDGs, it also makes their achievement all the more urgent and necessary”.

The upcoming schedule for the UN’s High Level Week, September 2021, is as follows:

· 21-27 September: General Assembly Debates

· 22 September: Durban Declaration (Anti-Racism summit)

· 23 September: The UN Food Systems Summit (transforming global food systems to meet SDG 2030)
