UK, France Report Record Daily COVID Cases
Surge in cases of Omicron across the United Kingdom has created a worrisome situation, as the country has reported more than 1,00,000 new daily cases for the first time since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. British regulators on Wednesday have approved of Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine for use in children aged between five to 11 years.
With the worrisome situtation in the country, UK has secured an additional 4.25 million courses of two anti-Covid pills from Merck and Pfizer, and National Health Services (NHS) has prepares itself for a wave of severe illness prompted by the coronavirus variant of Omicron. Ahead of the upcoming holiday season of Christmas, followed by New Years, UK has reported a total of 6,43,219 Covid-19 cases in the ast one week. With the emergence of Omicron variant, UK has been reporting highest daily infections worldwide. The country has reported 140 deaths on Wednesday.
Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that he will not introduce any further Covid restrictions in the UK before Christmas, but has warned that the situation remains "finely balanced" ahead of the new year. In a video posted on social media by Downing Street, Johnson said: "People can go ahead with their Christmas plans". However, he has suggested people should take a test before meeting elderly relatives. As on Wednesday, France has also reported a spike in cases with more than 84,000 new Covid-19 infections in a single day, country's highest figure since April this year. Sudden spike in Covid positive cases has caused major concern for the government, which has deemed the health situation as "critical." Similar to U.K's situtation, France health authorities are projecting over 1,00,000 daily cases due to omicron variant. Meanwhile, China has ordered for lockdown of as many as 13 million people in the northern city of Xi'an following, including the neighborhood and workplaces, due to spike in Covid cases. The situation has set off panic as the country is scheduled to hosts the Winter Olympic Games in less than 6 weeks. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, has called for a high-level meeting on Thursday to review the Covid-19 situation. India, as of December 23, has reported 236 Omicron cases across 15 states and Union Territories. As per the information provided by Union Health Ministry, 90 of the infected people have either recovered or migrated. Meanwhile, the Delhi government has banned mass gatherings during Christmas and New Year celebrations in a bid to curb further spread of the Omicron variant. India saw a spike in its daily Covid-19 cases on Thursday with single-day tally reaching up to 7,495. The daily deaths has also increased to 434. India's overall Covid-19 caseload has gone up to 3.42 crore. The national capital has the second highest Omicron cases with total cases going up to 64 cases. States such as Chandigarh, Ladakh,Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal have each reported one case of Omicron variant.
