US Court Convicts Harvey Weinstein Of Rape And Sexual Assault
Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has been found guilty of sexual assault and rape by a New York court.
Harvey, who has long reigned as one of most influential Hollywood producers, is convicted of third-degree rape and first-degree criminal sexual assault but was acquitted of two more serious charges against him, predatory sexual assault, that could have lead to life imprisonment.
He faces up to 29 years in prison over guilt verdicts relating to two women. His lawyers say he will appeal. In all, over 80 women had accused Weinstein of sexual harassment and assault, including former production assistant Mimi Haley in 2006 who accused him of sexually assaulting and raping her. The high-profile Manhattan trial became a watershed moment for the #MeToo movement. About 2,000 people were reportedly summoned during the jury selection process and prosecutors accused Weinstein's team of "systematically eliminating" young white women. Actor Mira Sorvino, who accused him of sexual harassment, tweeted, “The beginning of #justice. More to come, my sisters. #weinsteinguilty.”
