The Home Ministry has informed Parliament that six detention centres are functioning in the country, where over 3,000 foreign nationals have been incarcerated.

Apart from these, a new detention centre, with a capacity of 3,000, is being constructed in Assam’s Goalpara.

PM Modi has claimed while speaking at the Ramlila Maidan, that there is not a single detention centre in the country. But new data presented in Parliament is contrary to PM Modi's claim.

The Home Ministry, in response to a question, said in the Lok Sabha that six detention centres are functional just in Assam and one detention centre, with a capacity of 3,000, is under construction.

These six detention centres are in Tezpur, Silchar, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Kokrajhar and Goalpara.

Nusrat Jahan, TMC MP from Basirhat, had put this question to the Home Ministry.

G Kishan Reddy, Minister of State for Home Affairs, said that 3,331 people have been classified as foreigners in Assam so far and they have been kept in detention centres.

Among them, 797 in Tezpur, 479 in Silchar, 680 in Dibrugarh, 670 in Jorhat, 335 in Kokrajhar and 370 people in Goalpara are locked-up in detention centres.

The Minister of State for Home Affairs also said that in the past one year, teams of the National Human Rights Commission have toured the detention centres thrice but they cannot be called NRC Detention Centres. Only people who have been declared as foreigners through a due legal process have been kept here.

Data also reveals that 29 people have died in detention centres so far.
