7 Gujarati Ministers for 8 crore Gujaratis, 5 Mino
With less than a year left for the Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections, a total of Seven Ministers from Gujarat have been made a part of the new Union Cabinet. It also includes Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is a Lok Sabha MP from Gandhinagar, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who represents Gujarat in the Rajya Sabha.

Mansukh Mandaviya and Purushottam Rupala, who were Ministers of State before the reshuffle, have now been made Ministers in the Union Cabinet. BJP's Mansukh Mandaviya was the Minister of State (MoS) for Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Chemicals and Fertilizers till Wednesday. On the other hand, Purushottam Rupala was the Minister of State for Panchayati Raj and Farmers Welfare.


Mansukh Mandaviya is now the Health Minister of the country and Purushottam Rupala is now the Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister of the country. Both these leaders are Patidars. Mandaviya is 'Leva Patel', while Rupala is 'Kadva Patel'. Apart from these four, three other BJP leaders from Gujarat were inducted as Ministers of State in the Union Cabinet – Darshana Jardosh, Munjapara Mahendrabhai and Devusinh Chauhan. Darshana Jardosh has been given the post of Minister of State for Textiles and Railways. Apart from these, Munjapara Mahendrabhai has been made Minister of State in the Ministry of Women and Child Development and AYUSH and Devusinh Chauhan has been given the post of Minister of State for Communication.

Interestingly, Jardosh, Mahendrabhai and Chauhan are OBC leaders from different sections of the community. Darshana Jardosh, a three-time Lok Sabha MP from Surat, is 60 years old and has worked as a councilor of the Surat Municipal Corporation and a member of the Gujarat Social Welfare Board.

Munjapara Mahendrabhai is 52 years old and he has become an MP for the first time from Surendranagar in Gujarat. He has done his MD in General Medicine and Medical Sciences from Gujarat University.

Devusinh Chauhan, a two-time MP from Kheda in Gujarat, is 56 years old and has also served as an MLA in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly twice. Chauhan holds a Diploma in Electrical Engineering from Government Polytechnic College in Porbandar, and worked as an engineer with All India Radio before joining politics.

Apart from these, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has once again been made the Union Minister of Minority Affairs in the Modi cabinet.Hardeep Singh Puri, who hails from Punjab, was earlier the Aviation Minister of the country who has now been given the Ministry of Petroleum and Housing and Urban Affairs. Kiren Rijiju, who comes from Arunachal Pradesh and was earlier the Sports Minister of the country, has now been made the Law Minister of the country. Rijiju is a graduate of Hansraj College, University of Delhi and also holds a Bachelor's degree in Law from Campus Law Centre, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi.
