Irmim Shamim, who hails from Dhanore village of J&K’s Rajouri district, has become the first Gujjar woman in the Pir Panjal region to qualify for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after she cleared the MBBS entrance exam in June.

Shamim worked hard against all odds to make it to the premier institute. She said through hard work and self-study, she made it to the AIIMS course in the very first attempt. “Self-study helps a lot more than taking tuitions,” she said.

Belonging to a backward community and reeling with financial woes, Shamim took all the challenges coming on her way head-on. Due to the lack of good schools near her village, she had to walk 10 km every day to go to school. "Everyone has some problem in their life. You have to fight the challenges and success will definitely come to you," she said.

Her mother, who is an Anganwadi worker, is happy with her success and wants her to become a successful doctor and serve the people of Jammu & Kashmir and the country.

Shamim said, ”I never expected this but now that I've this opportunity, I'll give my 100% and work harder to bring name and fame to my district and state.”

Expressing happiness on her success, Shamim's uncle Liaqat Choudhary said that girls are the hope of the region. "The girls of Jammu & Kashmir have shown their talent in every field of life on the national and international levels," he said.

The District Development Commissioner, Aijaz Asad, also appreciated her achievement and assured her of every possible help so that she could continue studies in the future.
