Angry Migrant Workers Clash With Police In Surat
Clashes have erupted again between migrant labourers and police personnel in Gujarat’s industrial city Surat. Hundreds of labourers had gathered in the city’s Kadodara area demanding that they be sent home.

Surat Police, which reached the spot with the intention of taking retaliatory action, resorted to baton-charge, fired tear gas shells and pelted stones at the crowd, due to which the labourers flared up and they began resorting to breakage.

According to Surat Police, the situation has been brought under control. However, there is an atmosphere of tension in the entire area at present.

A large number of migrant labourers reside in Surat, which is famous for its textile and diamond industries. But factories here have been shut due to the lockdown and labourers have no arrangements for getting two square meals a day.

They have to stand in lines for hours to satiate their hunger and this is why most labourers want to go back to their home states.

A situation of confrontation is arising again and again over their demand to return home.

Earlier, on April 28, hundreds of labourers had pelted stones at the office of a diamond company alleging that they had been forced to work despite the coronavirus lockdown.

Labourers gathered in hundreds had blamed the company for making them work forcibly when they wanted to go back to their home states.

Amid this, when the police reached the spot, an atmosphere of tension had developed there.

The first violent demonstration by labourers in Surat demanding they be sent home had taken place on the evening of April 10.

During this period, arson also took place and more than 60 labourers were taken into custody. They had been demanding their salaries and that they should be sent back home.

PM Modi had announced the extension of the lockdown in an address to the nation on the morning of April 14. That evening, a large number of labourers had taken to the streets in Surat.
