The Budget Session of the Parliament has begun today, with Prime Minister addressing the media before the commencement of the session. At present, the President, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, is addressing the Parliament.

President Kovind laid out the achievements of the government, listing various schemes and measures undertaken. He spoke on abolishing triple talaq, achievements of India at the Tokyo Paralympics where athletes won 19 medals, establishment of sports infrastructure for youth, India’s health campaign against the coronavirus pandemic, India’s startup ecosystem, among others.

Key Points From President Kovind’s Address

  1. Rising exports: President Kovind said that India’s exports have risen to the value of $300 billion or ₹22 lakh crore, which is 5 times more than the levels of 2020.
  2. Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) schemes for the manufacturing sector is a step towards making “India a global manufacturing hub” and more than 60 lakh employment opportunities are being created.
  3. Make In India success: The President said that mobile phone manufacturing given a boost in the country. ₹73,000 crore package for encouraging Electronics and hardware technology and industry to realize Atmanirbhar Bharat. To this effect, MSMEs given 3 lakh crore collateral-free loans during pandemic for assistance. Recent research says 1.5 crore jobs saved, 15 lakh units assisted.
  4. Start-up Sector: The President said that since 2016, 60,000 new startups emerged in 56 sectors which provided employment to 6 lakh people. In 2021, 40 unicorn start-ups emerged in the country, worth ₹7,400 crore.
  5. Digital India campaign: Labourers linked with E-Shram portal, and UPI emerged as a big success.
  6. Measures for farmers: The government has allocated ₹1 lakh crore for over 8 crore farmers, of which 80% are small farmers.
  7. The government’s infrastructure development policies are a way to address social inequalities. Investment in infrastructure creates employment and has qualitative effects. Multi-modal transport being developed to integrate railways, airways, and highways. India is also among the top 4 driverless train networks of the world now.
  8. The ₹64,000-crore Ayushman Bharat scheme is an example of India’s long-term health readiness. Under the PM Ayushman Swasthya Mission, more than 80,000 health and wellness centres opened in the country along with 8,000 public dispensaries. Along with this, PLI schemes have been introduced to assist the Pharma sector.
  9. India also making strides in space and drone technology. PLI schemes have been introduced to encourage the sector.
  10. The President mention the momentum being gained towards Armed Forces modernization and self-dependance, mentioning the 209 equipment listed that will not be purchased from abroad henceforth.
