Citizenship Law: After UN, OIC Raises Objections

The controversial Citizenship Law is negatively affecting India’s international image. An institution of Islamic countries -- the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) -- has issued a scathing statement on the recent tumult among India’s minorities.

A statement released on behalf of IOC General Secretary Yusuf bin Ahmed bin Abdul Rehman says, “The General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation has been following recent developments affecting the Muslim minority in India. It expresses its concern over the recent developments pertaining to both the issue of citizenship rights and the Babri Masjid case. IOC repeats its demands to ensure security for India’s minorities and their religious sites.”

Earlier, India was dealt a blow on the Citizenship Law by the United Nations (U.N.). The U.N. expressed its concerns on the Citizenship Law -- which it described as discriminatory, the violent protests against it and the reckless use of police force to stop them.

Jeremy Lawrence, spokesperson for the United Nations Human Rights Commission, released a statement and said that with this Bill, the right to equality of citizens enshrined in the Constitution of India is being undermined.
