Corona Cases On Low Point, Yet Inoculation Below 5
India has recorded 18,795 new cases of coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours and infections are on a steady decline. This is the first time in six months that new cases in 24 hours are less than 20,000. On the other hand, the vaccination drive across the country has picked up too, but the performance has been lukewarm in 50% states of the country.

In a tweet on the ICAR Twitter handle, it was said that 87 crore vaccine shots have been administered as of now in India. Of these, 63.8 crore are first doses and 23.06 crore are second doses.

If the state-wise data of vaccination is seen, then it will be found that those states lagging in almost all indexes are falling behind on the vaccination drive as well. There are states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand where less than 10% of the eligible population has received a double dose of the vaccine.

In Uttar Pradesh, only 9% of the eligible population have received the double dose of an anti-COVID vaccine, whereas 36% of the state’s eligible population has received at least one dose. Bihar is in a similar situation as its neighbouring Uttar Pradesh. 9% of the eligible population is double vaccinated, and 35% of the qualifying population has received at least one dose.

In Jharkhand, 10% of the eligible population have received the double dose of an anti-COVID vaccine, whereas 35% of the state’s eligible population has received at least one dose.

50% States Have Below 50% Vaccine Coverage

There are 50% states of India where the vaccine coverage is less than 50% of the eligible population. That is, less than 50% of the population of those states have received even one dose of an anti-COVID vaccination. In all the different states, the number of fully inoculated people is less than 25% of the population.

States With Btter Vaccine Performance

However, if the contenders for relatively better performance in the vaccine drive are considered, then Lakshadweep, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Chandigarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, figure at the top of the list. Here, around 80% of the population is covered by the vaccine (at least one dose), whereas in some of the best performing states, more than 50% of the eligible population has been fully inoculated.

CoWin tells us that on 27th September, India administered more than 1 crore doses of the vaccine for the fifth time. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya thanked PM Narendra Modi for this achievement.
