As Airport Express Line reopens in the third phase, Delhi Metro is fully operational with resumed services on all the lines. The ongoing restrictions on the timing of the Metro have also been lifted and now the metro service will continue from 6 am to 11 pm. On the Noida-Greater Noida route, services will be available from 6 am to 10 pm as before.

However, the DMRC has said that it is necessary to follow COVID-19 protocols during this period and the journey can be done only using the metro card.

In the pre-COVID period, 25 to 26 lakh passengers used to travel in Delhi Metro every day, but now this number has come down drastically. According to DMRC, about one and a half lakh people are riding the metro every day.

Earlier, in coaches where 250 to 300 passengers used to travel, now only 50 passengers have been allowed to travel. It is important to know here that DMRC's service was stopped from 22 March and the financial burden has been mounting. To reduce this pressure, in August last month, DMRC announced a 50 percent reduction in the allowances and perks of over 14,000 employees.

DMRC has taken a huge loan of Rs 35.98 crores from Japan agency JICA for metro projects which has to be repaid in 30 years. In the current financial year, DMRC has to pay a loan of Rs 1,242.83 crores but till date, the corporation has been able to repay only Rs 79.19 crores. The remaining Rs 1,163.64 crore loans are to be repaid in this financial year and DMRC is trying its best to increase the income through the metro service in some way.

However, the biggest challenge before DMRC is to follow the protocol made for travelling in the metro to avoid infection. On Friday, DMRC's Flying Squad caught 92 passengers who were neither wearing masks nor following physical distancing. They were released after being fined of Rs 200 each from all 92 passengers.

After the commencement of Metro service on all lines, DMRC Managing Director Mangu Singh has appealed to plan your journey in such a way as to avoid travelling in the metro during peak hours. Along with this, he has also appealed to all the office owners to allow their employees to change the time to save them from the crowd.
