Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed Ali Wins Nobel Peace Prize 2019
The Nobel Peace Prize for 2019 was awarded to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali for his work towards resolving his country’s conflict with bitter foe Eritrea. The Ethiopian prime minister clinched a peace deal last year that ended 20 years of military stalemate between his country and their northern neighbour Eritrea.
Mr. Abiy was honoured ”for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighboring Eritrea,” the Nobel Committee said.
The Committee lauded him for giving his nation hope after years of conflict, tackling corruption and working to give women greater rights in his nation. The committee acknowledged that there was still much work to be done to see genuine democracy thrive in Ethiopia, but said Mr. Abiy had taken great strides in the right direction and they hoped the Peace Prize would help push further progress for democratic reform.
