The COVID-19 lockdown may have forced people to stay indoors and step out only for essentials. But a man in UP’s Ghaziabad who went to buy groceries came back home with a wife.

On top of this, the man’s mother, shocked by his sudden and secret wedding, denied him and the newly-wed bride the entry to the home.

The mother soon approached the Sahibabad police station complaining about her son.

"I had sent my son to do the grocery shopping today, but when he returned, he came back with his wife. I am not ready to accept this marriage," a teary-eyed mother said.

The 26-year-old groom, Guddu, intimated that his wedding took place at an Arya Samaj Mandir in Hardwar two months ago.

“We could not get the marriage certificate at that time due to lack of witnesses. I had decided to visit Haridwar again but could not due to the lockdown," he said.

After returning from Haridwar, Savita, his wife, was staying at a rental accommodation in Delhi due to the lockdown but was asked to vacate the room.

For now, the police has asked the landlord to let the couple stay at the rented place.

The newlyweds are hopeful to get a marriage certificate once the lockdown is lifted.
