Two years after being suspended from Gorakhpur’s BRD Medical College over the death of 63 kids within 72 hours, paediatrician Dr Kafeel Khan was given clean chit today by a UP government inquiry. He was, in fact, commended for doing everything in his power to help save lives.

The probe report was handed over to him on Thursday by BRD officials. "The allegations against the accused are insufficient...Therefore it is submitted that the accused officer is not guilty," the report stated.

It also states that Dr Kafeel was not the nodal officer of the encephalitis ward when the incident occurred and that despite being on leave, he did to the best of his abilities to save lives by arranging 500 jumbo oxygen cylinders in his personal capacity.

The deaths had taken place in August 2017 due to oxygen shortage in the government-run hospital. After the incident, the UP government’s axe had fallen on a number of BRD medical college doctors including Dr Kafeel Khan. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath blamed Dr Kafeel for the deaths while denying the deaths occurred due to lack of oxygen.

Dr Kafeel was suspended soon after and was jailed for nine months after a criminal case of medical negligence, corruption and dereliction of duty was filed against him.

But an inquiry panel instituted by the UP government to probe the child deaths has concluded Dr Kafeel is not guilty of the charges brought against him. The inquiry panel, formed on August 22, 2017, submitted its report to the state government on April 18, 2019, after Dr Kafeel moved Allahabad High Court on March 7, 2019.

Dr Kafeel has also demanded for compensation for the afflicted families. “The government must apologise to them,” he said.
