Indians Abandoning Son’s Preference, Acceptance For Daughters Growing: Survey
The long-standing 'difference between sons and daughters' is now disappearing from the Indian society. According to a recent report, over the last three decades, there has been an increase in the number of families who have adopted family planning after the birth of a daughter. This shows that there is a growing awareness against gender discrimination in society. This is the reason that now people are not hesitating to give up their desire for sons and opt for sterilisation after the birth of a daughter.
According to the National Family Health Survey, where 16% of couples underwent sterilisation after two daughters in 1992-93, the figure almost doubled to 33.6% in 2015-16. Besides, the proportion of couples with three daughters has also increased from 20% to 34%.
The International Institute of Population Sciences report states that while son’s preference still dominates, but this mentality is waning even in states with high son preference like Punjab, Haryana and Maharashtra. Researchers say that the preference of only daughters among married couples has increased and that the adoption of permanent methods of family planning after the birth of daughters only has also reduced domestic violence against daughters. According to the new health report, Punjab, Haryana and Maharashtra are the three states where sons are given more priority. Whereas in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, daughters are more preferred. The survey shows that the number of married couples undergoing sterilisation after a child, especially a daughter, has increased from 1.5% to 3.1% in Punjab, while in Haryana, it has increased from 0.7% to 5.1% and from 5.4% to 10.3% in Maharashtra. Similarly, the number of couples who opted for sterilisation after two children, especially two daughters, has risen from 4.7% to 7.9% in Punjab, from 2.9% to 9.9% in Haryana and 25% to 36% in Maharashtra. According to the survey, the number of couples who have either undergone sterilization or want family planning after only one daughter has increased. In Punjab with the highest priority for sons, the proportion has risen by 8%, 20% in Haryana and 10% in Maharashtra. According to the report, 21% of married couples with one daughter have either sterilised or don’t want more children in Punjab. Simply put, the acceptance of daughters in India has increased and gender discrimination is slowly disappearing in society.
