Kerala Assembly Passes Anti-CAA Resolution
State governments are constantly defying the central government over the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Now, the Kerala Assembly has moved a resolution against the implementation of the Citizenship Law.

Presenting the resolution, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan demanded revocation of the Citizenship Law. Vijayan said, “There is a long history of secularism in Kerala. Many civilizations, including Greeks, Romans and Arabs reached this land. Christians and Muslims arrived in Kerala a long time ago. Our tradition is inclusive. It is essential that our Assembly keeps this tradition alive.”

Vijayan made it clear that the CAA will not be implemented in Kerala and no detention centre will be built in the state. The Kerala government has also ordered work on the National Population Register (NPR) to be stopped. On December 29, Vijayan had convened a meeting of political parties, and social and religious leaders in Thiruvananthapuram, where it was decided that a joint front should be erected against the Citizenship Law.

Meanwhile, at the other end, West Bengal Mamata Banerjee has opened up a front against this law. She is engaging in daily protests against the law and also garnering support from other states.

Nationalist Congress Party Chief Sharad Pawar has issued a letter of support against the law to Banerjee. Pawar said that he is in solidarity with all parties which are against the Citizenship Law and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party, which is the main opposition party in Uttar Pradesh (UP), has also sped up its campaign against the Citizenship Law, NRC and NPR.

The party took out a cycle rally of its Members of Legislative Assembly from the party headquarters to UP Assembly, in which MLAs carried posters with the slogan, ‘Nahi chahiye NPR, Humko chahiye rozgar!’ (We don’t want NPR, We want jobs!).
