Maharashtra, Haryana Polls
Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana will take place in a single phase on October 21 while counting of votes will be held on October 24, Election Commission chief Sunil Arora said on Saturday. Both Maharashtra and Haryana are the first states to go to polls after the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year.

While the term of 90-member Haryana assembly ends on November 2, that of the 288-member Maharashtra assembly expires on November 9. With the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct has come into effect in the two states.

The CEC said that bypolls will also be held on October 21 in 64 assembly seats across 18 states and union territories. The byelection for one Lok Sabha seat in Bihar will also take place simultaneously.

While Maharashtra has 8.94 crore registered voters and Haryana has 1.82 crore voters.

In Maharashtra, the ruling BJP and its ally Shiv Sena are hammering out the fine details of sharing seats for the 288-member assembly. They fought separately in the 2014 state election. The BJP won 122 seats in Maharashtra in 2014; the Shiv Sena took home 63 seats. Their rival Congress won 42 and Sharad Pawar's NCP 41 seats.

In Haryana's 90-seat assembly in the 2014 state election, the BJP won 47 and the Congress 15; the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) took 19. The rest were won by other regional parties and independents.

The Chief Election Commissioner also appealed to political parties to avoid single-use plastic during campaigns. "Election campaigns have an environmental cost, we have asked political parties not to use plastic. We will reissue our appeal," said the CEC.
