MGNREGA Employment Figures Hit Dismal Low
The Central government, which has been failing constantly on the employment front, is now proving incapable of providing work to labourers in rural areas of the country.
The latest figures presented in the Lok Sabha reveal that employment given to labourers across the country, for 100 days, under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), has reduced to half.
Rural Development Minister Narendra Singh Tomar informed the Lok Sabha that in 2018-19, on an average, labourers were given employment for 51 days, whereas the provision is for 100 days. According to new statistics, in financial year 2018-19, labourers were employed for 23 days in Manipur, 30 days in Punjab, 31 days in Assam, 34 days in Haryana, 39 days in Odisha, 42 days in Jharkhand, 42 days in Uttar Pradesh, 42 days in Bihar, 45 days in Uttarakhand, 46 days in Gujarat, 46 days in Tamil Nadu and 47 days in Maharashtra. Workers were employed for 50 days in Karnataka, 52 days in Madhya Pradesh, 52 days in Himachal Pradesh, 57 days in Rajasthan, 57 days in Chhattisgarh, 57 days in Jammu and Kashmir, 58 days in Andhra Pradesh, 66 days in Kerala, 72 days in Meghalaya and 92 days in Mizoram. Under MGNREGA, labourers are guaranteed work for 100 days but the government has been able to provide work to them only for 50 days on an average.
