NGT Questions Centre On Deteriorating Air Quality In Delhi-NCR

Keeping in view the increasing level of pollution in Delhi, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked the central government why were farmers not provided with stubble-burning implements in advance? In addition, the NGT has asked neighbouring states for a daily report on pollution to stop pollution in Delhi/NCR.

The level of pollution in Delhi’s air is continuously increasing. On Wednesday morning, pollution in Delhi was at ‘very poor’ category, with PM 2.5 at 250 and PM 10 at 350 levels.

The areas in Delhi where the level of pollution was at ‘very poor’ category on Wednesday morning were Lodhi Road, Anand Vihar, Delhi University, Mathura Road, Dhirpur, Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurugram.

On Tuesday, the NGT directed the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab to prepare a daily report on the increase in air pollution caused from stubble burning.

In addition, NGT asked the three neighbouring state governments to create awareness among farmers about pollution caused due to stubble burning.

The NGT also expressed concern about why farmers are not being given implements for stubble burning. In response, the lawyer representing the central government informed the NGT that the centre has earmarked
Rs 600 crore so that farmers can buy those implements.

Meanwhile, on the orders of the NGT, the Punjab government has asked one senior IAS officer in every district to coordinate with various agencies to stop stubble burning.
