The Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the sexual harassment charges against former minister and BJP leader Chinmayanand made by a law student in Shahjahanpur, has not registered a case of rape against him.

With no mention of rape in the FIR, various questions are being raised on the investigation of the agency set up by the UP government after the Supreme Court's order last month.

Meanwhile, the SIT quizzed the woman for about 11 hours and gathered evidence through inspecting her hostel room at the Shahjahanpur college for nearly eight hours.

The victim and her father have once again reiterated that the rape case has not been filed due to government pressure and that they are being threatened.

Moreover, the victim's father has alleged that some of the evidence his daughter had collected against Chinmayanad is missing from her hostel room. “Important evidence including intelligence cameras were there in the room before the hostel room was sealed for three days. However, it was lost during the SIT probe.”

He further said, “The probe is being done with the orders from the Supreme Court, but the speed is extremely slow. The reason for this is the immense clout that Chinmayanand enjoys in the corridors of power and his stronghold in the BJP government.”

Police had on August 27 booked Chinmayanand under IPC sections 364 and 506 related to abduction with the purpose of murder and criminal intimidation, with no mention of any sexual assault.
