Protests Against Citizenship Amendment Bill Intens
Protests have intensified in north-eastern states against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) 2019, which decides citizenship on the basis of religion.

Most shops are closed in Guwahati and there are curfew-like conditions. Only a few people and some stray animals can be seen on roads and there have been incidents of arson in many places.

Apart from Guwahati, demonstrators in Golaghat and Dibrugarh took off their clothes and registered their protest. In Sivasagar and Nalbari too, people from many organisations have taken to the streets.

Protestors pasted anti-CAB posters in front of the residences of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and against three ministers of the Assam Gana Parishad in various places.

AIUDF chief and Dhubri MP Badruddin Ajmal said that this Bill is anti-Constitutional and anti-National Register of Citizens (NRC). People in Assam are also upset because the process of NRC was adopted after a long struggle. After spending crores of rupees, illegal migrants were identified but now, from among them, Hindu migrants are being given citizenship. So, what is the meaning of making an NRC in all this?

Protestors allege that a large number of Hindus from Bangladesh have settled down in Assam. The central government wants to polarise the society by making them citizens and voters.

The Shiv Sena, too, says that the government can give citizenship to illegal refugees but they should not have voting rights for atleast 25 years.

Due to these reasons, apart from Assam, this Bill is also being opposed in Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. In Tripura, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), an ally of the BJP, is also opposing the CAB. Party spokesperson Mangal Debbarma has called for a 12-hour strike in the state. IPFT workers have been arrested from various places.
