Red Alert For Mumbai After Heavy Rainfall Leads To Flooding; Local Train, Bus Services Stalled

Overnight incessant rains have resulted in flood-like situation in low-lying areas of Mumbai.

Roads are submerged in many areas including Dadar, Chembur, Santacruz, Andheri, Lower Parel, Hindmata, Kings Circle and Sion. Due to the flooding, local train and bus services have also come to a standstill. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for August 4 and August 5 in Mumbai. Offices have also been closed for two days.

According to Western Railway, there has been waterlogging in Dadar and Prabhadevi but special suburban services are being run between Virar-Andheri-Bandra while local services have been suspended between Bandra-Churchgate, according to the Western Railway.

The Western and Harbour line between Kurla and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) have been completely stopped. According to the Central Railway, due to high tide resulting in waterlogging, mainline and Harbour line services of Wadala and Parel have been suspended. No suburban trains are help up in between stations.

Due to waterlogging in Parel East, vehicles in the parking lot are submerged and buses are stuck in the water.

The downpour has led to a diversion of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses on 56 routes in more than 26 areas of the city. Due to the flooding, BMC has temporarily installed 299 pumping machines in various areas of the city. Apart from this, fire brigade and operating staff have also been placed on alert.

Due to heavy rainfall, a part of the hill slid away in Mumbai’s Makar on the Western Express Highway, after which the road is closed.

The Meteorological Department has said that from August 6, the speed of rain will start decreasing. Meanwhile, fishermen have been advised not to venture far into the sea.
