The rising backwater of Gujarat’s Sardar Sarovar Dam has become a matter of life and death for hundreds of villages in Madhya Pradesh. In Badwani district, 19 more villages have begun submerging as the water level of the dam rose above 134 meters late Wednesday. On September 4, the water level at Sardar Sarovar Dam was recorded at 138.68 meters. Protests in all these villages have intensified after water entered their houses.

In a direct attack on the Gujarat government, villagers say that the government has been increasing the water level of the dam with no regard for the rules.

These are the people from the lowest strata of the society living in these villages. They demand until the 32,000 displaced by the dam are not fully rehabilitated, the gates of Sardar Sarovar Dam should be kept open.

The affected have also alleged that the former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh is directly responsible for this disaster. “He submitted wrong affidavits before the Supreme Court and now the rehabilitation work is at bay,” protestors said.
