Savarkar Road Sign Leads To Stand-Off In JNU
At a time when most schools, colleges and universities in the country have been closed to deal with the challenges posed by the deadly coronavirus, commotion is increasing in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) over RSS ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
When a road in JNU campus was named after Savarkar, student unions from opposing ideologies discoloured it and said that there is no place in JNU for a controversial personality like Savarkar.
There is bedlam over the naming of a road in JNU after Savarkar and while the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has welcomed this decision, the rest of the student unions on campus are against it. The very next day after the signage was installed, Savarkar’s name was removed and instead B.R. Ambedkar’s (who drafted the Indian Constitution) name was written over it. National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) leader Sunny Dhiman said that Savarkar’s ideas are polarising and divisive and there should be no place for such a figure in JNU. Meanwhile, JNU’s ABVP unit said that their organisation has been demanding the installation of Savarkar’s statue and the naming of a ‘chair’ after him in campus for a long time. However, students’ unions from opposing ideologies have begun fretting and fuming when only a road has been named after Savarkar. Earlier, JNU Students’ Union President Aishe Ghosh had said in a tweet, “It’s a shame to the legacy of JNU that this man's name has been put in this university. Never did the university have space for Savarkar and his stooges and never will it have!” Savarkar is a controversial figure in the country’s freedom movement and fracas often keeps erupting over him. Last year, Delhi University (DU) Students’ Union President Shakti Singh had installed a statue of Savarkar in the North Campus overnight, over which a lot of chaos had flared up. In the end, the DU administration had removed the statue from the North Campus.
