SC Rejects Nirbhaya Convict's Review Plea Of Death
The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected the death penalty review petition of Nirbhaya convict Akshay Singh, in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice R. Banumathi pronounced the judgment on the plea filed by Singh, seeking review of SC's 2017 judgment upholding his death penalty.

The convict Akshay Singh in his mercy petition said the dying declaration of Nirbhaya was "doubtful and cannot be relied upon" and that he deserved mercy as there were media and public pressure to "implicate" him.

A new bench heard the review plea after Chief Justice SA Bobde on Tuesday recused himself saying his nephew had represented Nirbhaya in a court earlier.

Of the six accused involved in the gang-rape, torture and killing of a young medical student — later known as “Nirbhaya” —  four were convicted, one had committed suicide and a juvenile was released after three years in a reform home. The review pleas of the three other convicts have been dismissed before.
