A curfew has been imposed in five areas of Surat, Gujarat’s industrial city, till April 22.

The state government announced the curfew after 35 new coronavirus cases were found between Wednesday 6 p.m. and Thursday 10 a.m.

During the curfew, there will be a relaxation between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. every day for people to buy essential items.

According to Ashwini Kumar, secretary to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, the decision to impose the curfew in five police station areas has been taken in view of the rapidly-increasing coronavirus cases.

The curfew has been imposed in Salabatpura, Mahidharpura, Lal Gate, Athwalines and Limbayat area’s Kamru Nagar, Kumar said.

He also said that only women will be allowed to step out of their homes during the daily three-hour relaxation in the curfew.

The highest number of coronavirus cases (492) in Gujarat has been reported in Ahmedabad.

While the total number of patients in Vadodara stands at 127, in Surat, it has reached 86.

Along with the challenge posed by the coronavirus, the Surat administration also has to face the wrath of labourers.

Over here, thousands of labourers violated the lockdown twice and stepped outside. They allege that they are not getting their monthly salary from their employers and want to go back home.

Among them, most of the labourers are from states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
