A team of law students from Tamil Nadu National Law University in Tiruchirappalli have won this year’s prestigious ‘KK Luthra memorial moot court’ contest held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team comprising of Manikandan Prabhu J, S. Sivakumar, Nilavan S., were adjudged as winners by a jury comprising High court judges and top lawyers of India. 

The K. K. Luthra Memorial Moot Court is annually held at the Campus Law Centre, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi (India) in the third weekend of January every year. The competition is the only exclusive International Criminal Law Moot Court held in India. Due to the restrictions and safety precautions for Covid-19, this year the moot court was for the first time held online. Close to 70 teams participated with close to 20 teams taking part from abroad including Australia, Africa, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal. This year's moot problem focused on the issue of the bail. 


"Mooting is an academic exercise for members of the bar which gives the future members of the bar an element of practicality to what they have learnt in the classroom’," Supreme Court Justice Mr Surya Kant said in his valedictory address. 

While the top spot was won by students from the Tamil Nadu Law university, the runners up went to the team from SASTRA Deemed to be University, Thanjavur [consisting of Haripriya V., Saradha Dharsini, Nandhini S.R]. The ‘Best Speaker’ was awarded to Isabel Chan Jia Yi from the National University of Singapore, Faculty of Law, Singapore. While the award for the ‘Second-Best Speaker’ was awarded to Sakshi Chauhan from ILS Law College, Pune the best memorial was awarded to Jamia Milia Islamia, Okhla, New Delhi.

According to organisers, the competition this year was even more fierce as more teams were able to participate online also speaking at the closing of the almost week-long competition, Senior advocate Sidharth Luthra noted that "2020 was a traumatic year for everyone but the transformation of the moot (to a virtual forum) has been a learning experience for all of us especially the young law students and teams involved". This year marks the 17th year that the moot court has been successfully held in New Delhi.
