Ram Vilas Paswan, the founder of the Lok Janshakti Party and the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, who was hospitalized for the last one month, died on Thursday evening at the age of 74. His son and LJP national president Chirag Paswan confirmed his father’s death via Twitter. Chirag Paswan shared a throwback picture with his father and tweeted — ‘Papa, you are no longer in this world but I know you are always with me wherever you are. Miss you Papa.’

Ram Vilas Paswan’s health was shaky for some time now. About a week ago, after he suddenly fell ill, he underwent a heart operation on October 3. On Thursday, his heart and kidney had stopped working properly and he breathed his last at the Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in Delhi at around 1.15 pm. The body of the Dalit leader will be brought to Patna in the afternoon on Friday and his funeral will be performed with state honours at the Digha Ghat in Patna on Saturday. At the same time, the national flag will fly at half-mast in Delhi, capital of all states and union territories on Friday, and the flag will remain at half-mast on the day of his funeral.

Condoling Paswan’s death, President Ramnath Kovind tweeted — Paswan ji emerged as a firebrand socialist, learning public service from veterans like Jayaprakash Narayan during the anti-Emergency movement. He had a deep bond with the public and was always ready for the public interest. My deepest condolences to his family and supporters.

PM Narendra Modi said, there are no words to express sorrow; Such a void has been created in our country, which will probably never be filled. PM tweeted- The death of Shri Ram Vilas Paswan ji is a personal loss. I have lost a friend and colleague who always passionately wanted to ensure that every poor person lives a respectable life.

Rahul Gandhi tweeted — The news of Ram Vilas Paswan ji’s untimely demise is sad. The poor-downtrodden have lost a strong political voice today.
Former Bihar CM Rabri Devi tweeted — Very saddened by the passing away of respected Ram Vilas Paswan ji. He had a family relationship for decades. Today the stove will not burn in our house. May his soul rest in peace.

In Indian politics, Paswan was considered someone who had the knack to recognise which way the political wind is blowing. No matter whose government it was, Ram Vilas Paswan was always in power. His USP was that he always aligned before the election, never after the election. He went to jail during the Emergency imposed by then PM Indira Gandhi. For the next five decades, Paswan was also a minister in the same Congress-led UPA government many times. BJP used to oppose Paswan’s policies, Paswan was also a minister in the same NDA government.

Ram Vilas Paswan contested 11 elections, winning nine of them. Paswan has a record of being a minister under six Prime Ministers. In the 1977 Lok Sabha election, he had set a world record of winning the Hajipur seat by more than 4 lakh votes while contesting on Janata Dal ticket. Paswan has been a Lok Sabha MP and Rajya Sabha MP twice. Currently, he was a Rajya Sabha MP from Bihar and handled the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution in the Narendra Modi Cabinet.
